My Mom

March 11th, 2013 | Posted by Leah in Uncategorized - (6 Comments)

My mom is a wonderful lady and I am so lucky to be her daughter.  She has taught me so much in my life, but over the past couple of years I’ve begun to teach her some things too!!  I convinced her (and my sister) to come along with me to the FARM CHICKS a few years ago….and she caught  the junking bug!!!

My mom Marilyn, my niece Megan, my sister Tanya and myself at The Farm Chicks!! One of the many trips out to the car with our finds!!

I must say, like so many of us, her style of decorating has changed over the  years.  She and my Dad have recently moved to the Sunshine Coast and built their dream home right by the ocean.  This in itself provides so much fun for decorating!!  West Coast Style mixed with the Ocean view….ahhhh it has been so much fun watching and helping her fill her home with new and old treasures over the past 3 years!!

Her latest project involved painting!!  I am so proud of her for tackling this big job on her own!!  One of her guest rooms has the bedroom furniture that my parents bought so many years ago.  Very nice furniture, and made so well….BUT…not the style or color for her new home.  She came to visit me one day and she and I went and spent some time looking over some CeCe Caldwell paint colors.  She bought some supplies and carried on home and the next thing I new she started sending me pics of all this furniture she was painting!!  I must admit, I was shocked that she took the plunge and painted it!!  But what a great surprise!!  It looks wonderful!  And she is so happy with how it turned out that she is far from done!!

Here are a few pictures of some of the projects she has been working on…

She’s still thinking that she would like to change the knobs…she just hasn’t found the right ones yet.  And I did have to give her a little trouble for not taking before pictures!!  But to give you an idea, they were a VERY dark wood before.  She still has to paint the bed, so I will make sure that she sends a before picture as well as the finished project!!  I can’t wait to go and see it in person!!

Great job Mom!!  What a wonderful makeover for such a small cost!!  She loves it so much that she has picked out a different color and is getting ready to tackle her dining room table, chairs and china cabinet….it is going to look fantastic!!  I will make sure to post lots of before and after pictures on that project.

Here is one of my favorite pics of my mom and I and my kids.  Just a little stroll after dinner one night at their house.  Wonderful Memories!!

I would love to see some of your before and after projects!!  It’s amazing what a coat of paint will do to change the look of a piece of furniture.  Maybe you have your eye on a piece in your house right now….don’t be afraid!!  Take the plunge and do it!!  If you need any advice on color or technique, don’t hesitate to drop me a line!!

Cheers!!  And Happy Painting!!

Oregon Junking Journey!!

March 4th, 2013 | Posted by Leah in Uncategorized - (1 Comments)

A few weeks ago I went on my first junking trip of the year….and it was a fun one!!  I convinced my friend Eileen to take a road trip with me to Hillsboro, Oregon for the Junk Salvation Market.  Eileen has never been to a market (other than The Olde Farmhouse Market where she sets up The Runway Cafe and provides all the vendors and shoppers with delicious food!!)  so she was more than willing to come along and see what kind of a junking world I live for!!  She was not sure what to expect, however, I did bribe her with the possibility of having time to hit the outlets in Oregon!! (no tax!!!)

So…off we went in my hubby’s big truck, with lots of room for treasures!!  Music of our choice (no kids music on this trip!! LOL!), tea breaks when ever we wanted and the sunshine and warmer weather of Oregon waiting for us!!

We left Friday morning around 8am and we arrived at our hotel in Hillsboro around 3:30pm.  It was a great drive, and I don’t think we stopped talking the whole way!!  After checking into the hotel, we hit the Costco (that was conveniently located on the way to the market) and the Starbucks and then went to get in line for Junk Salvation!!!

The Funky Junk Sisters had this vintage camper and bonfire set up outside the entrance.  Very cool!  The market was open  to early bird ticket purchasers on Friday from 6pm to 9pm so we made sure we were there by 5:30 to get a good spot in line!

And the market was definately worth the drive!!  There were so many great vendors, with some really unique pieces.  Everything from furniture, collectables, jewelry, to handmade, you name it…they had it!!

Saturday morning we were lined up and ready for day two!!  We had just as much fun looking through all the booths a second time…finding somethings we over looked the evening before.  After spending the morning shopping, it was time to load the truck!!  And oops!! I may have forgotten to mention to Eileen that we have to haul out all our own purchases!!! But we were a good team and after many trips  we managed to fit it all in the truck!!

We finished the day off with some lunch and of course….. a trip to THE OUTLETS!!   After a great day of shopping for old and new,  we ended the evening with a nice dinner.  Sunday morning arrived and we were both appreciating our little girls weekend away, but were also happy to be heading back home to our families!!

This was just the first of many trips this year, and I hope that all of them will be just as much fun!!  Maybe you will find some time to head out on a junking journey of your own…I’d love to hear all about it!!!

Cheers!!

Are you ready for an amazing day of shopping at the market this Saturday? Do you have something specific you are looking for or just out to find that special “something”? Here are our thoughts on what you might want to bring with you!!

1. Family and friends you love to shop with!! The more the merrier and it makes the car ride more fun!!

2. Wear layers!! If you are an “early bird” it might be chilly waiting in the line up :)

3. Re Usable shopping bag or cart. These help you keep your hands free for more shopping!!

4. Measuring Tape to make sure your item is a perfect fit :)

5. A vehicle large enough for that “surprise” find. You do not want to have to make your friends walk home….but you will!!!

6. CASH!! Most of our vendors transactions are as vintage as the market!!

Whether you are “old hat” to markets or a “newbie” it is sure to be a fun filled shopping adventure. And to top it off,  for the non shoppers and for those who start to feel a little “peckish”, there is the “Roosters Corner” !! The Runway Cafe will be open, offering food and drinks to get you through the day!!

We are so excited and can not wait to see all of you!!!

Happy Junking

Welcome to The Olde Farmhouse

Antique Star
Well……here we are!! Day 1 of our new blog! What can we say…..Leah and Barb…..we are 2 Farmhouse girls at heart!! We love vintage, shabby chic, rustic junk (or treasures!) and we are so excited to be starting our new adventure together and to be sharing it with all of you!

Our plans for a Vintage Market are well underway. This has been a dream of ours and we are delighted to see it come to fruition. We are bringing together an impressive line-up of vendors presenting treasures from antiques to primitives to hand made items in one place for you to come and see.

Our Vintage Market will be a one-of-a-kind event for the Metro Vancouver area where people can come to search out unique collectibles and sought after ‘Junk’ to enhance their home decor. And when we use the term “Junk” we mean treasures found through “Junking Journeys”, remote antique shops, garage sales and other places where “one wo/man’s junk becomes another wo/man’s treasure”.

So, stay tuned for information about the Vintage Market, our Junking Journeys and our adventures in the pursuit of one-of-a-kind treasures.
